We are always amazed and inspired by the tremendous works of volunteers. Throughout the Atlanta, the handy work of volunteers, whether individuals, families, or community groups, is a vital component to the beauty of our city.

In a south-side park, a group of dedicated volunteers began to reclaim a dying stream. With about a dozen workers, some landscape timbers, a couple loads of mulch, and a few tools, the project was underway. Three hours and a few sore muscles later, a major mouth to the stream was cleared of debris, a natural erosion control mechanism was installed, and the stream came back to life.

In another city park, a utility company had sent large trucks to perform some heavy maintenance. Unfortunately, several trees were damaged; others were completely destroyed. The residents rallied, got a few volunteers from the neighborhood and the local college, planted forty new trees, spread mulch and revitalized the park and the surrounding community.

The stories are too numerous to tell, yet they all have a common thread. When things need to be done, it’s up to us to take charge.

The definition of volunteerism is to work for a particular cause without financial compensation. However, that doesn’t mean that volunteers don’t get a reward. It may not be financial, but you and your fellow workers get the satisfaction of your labors when you look at your completed tasks and say, “WE DID IT!!”

The Game has begun. Don’t yell from the sidelines, don’t watch from the bleachers, and don’t cheer from a distance. The park needs you. GET IN THE GAME and LET’S PLAY.
