Throughout Atlanta, volunteers are giving their time, money and resources to improve our city's parks. We find their dedication inspirational – and we want to help them inspire others. Which is why Park Pride is embarking on an ambitious "Park Visioning" initiative.
Like you, Park Pride sees the beauty and the potential in your parks. Under the kudzu,
the graffiti and the overgrowth lies a diamond in the rough, just waiting to be lovingly carved
and polished so that it can shine. If you are organized – if you have a group of committed
individuals ready to make your park shine, Park Pride is ready to help. Here's how it works.
First, we need to determine whether your park qualifies. Here are the criteria. |
If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them! -- Henry David Thoreau
|
- The park must be between 5 and 15 acres in size.
- There must be an established Friends of the Park group.
- Community members must be participating in our park inspection program.
Our landscape architect and Director of Community Building will work with qualifying community groups to document the current status of your park. Together, we will list your park's amenities and features, describe the layout, determine uses, and survey users. Next, we will identify the stakeholders in your park community and work to bring them to the table. Neighborhood groups, schools, religious organizations, businesses and elected officials all have a stake in your park. We need their input, and your park needs their support.
Having gathered the baseline data and identified the stakeholders, we will help you host a series of meetings to develop a vision for your park. We will listen to the voices of all stakeholders. Do you need more picnic areas? Ball fields, walking trails, flowers or trees? Together, we will determine how we can change your park to meet these needs – and hopes – and dreams. This will be our vision.
Along the way, we will develop projects that can help you reach your vision. We will identify materials, tools and resources that will be needed, emphasizing projects that your community can implement on its own or with available partners.
Unfortunately, Park Pride doesn’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to change your park. But you don’t need that much money to make a difference. And we can help identify potential resources and other means of support. It’s surprising what a few enterprising people and a little money can accomplish.
But nothing can happen unless you get active, organized and involved. This is the first and most crucial step to developing and implementing a viable vision for your park. Nobody is going to do it for you.
So rise to the challenge. Find a few like-minded folks in your community and get organized. Then give us a call – shoot us an e-mail – or drop us a line. Park Pride will start working with you to develop a vision for your little corner of the world. For more information, contact Walt Ray at 404-432-9320 or walt@parkpride.org.
