Rosa Burney Park Community Garden
Empowering youth through education in urban agriculture and entrepreneurship
This garden functions as both as a communal spot for neighbors in the Mechanicsville Neighborhood as well as a locus for programming by HABESHA (Helping Africa By Establishing Schools at Home and Abroad). HABESHA focuses on environmental and leadership education for youth in the community. Their programming in the garden includes a training program called HABESHA Works! that teaches skills in urban organic agriculture and agro-business development. HABESHA and its participants have transformed the garden area of the park into a beautiful urban oasis. The garden boasts a butterfly garden, a unique rainwater catchment system, and a recycling drop-off site. Weekly donations are made to community members who participate in harvest days at the garden.
