Blue Heron Nature Preserve Community Garden
Sharing harvest with the hungry
This garden is an important part of Blue Heron Nature Preserve’s efforts to preserve seven acres of flood plain along Nancy Creek. The garden creates a spot for community building and a way to enjoy the natural environment in a sustainable way. The garden site is on an old home development, so the founding gardeners had to overcome the challenge of concrete foundations and other construction material on the site.
The gardeners are extremely committed to the donation of produce to the Crossroads Community Ministries Soup Kitchen. In 2010 they donated 134.5 pounds of fresh, organic produce to the homeless of Atlanta. Almost all of the gardeners have some asparagus in their plots, and there are also several gardeners who plant ornamental flowers, adding to the natural beauty of the garden. The honey bees at Blue Heron Nature Preserve add to the fertility of the garden by pollinating the plants and flowers.
